അര്‍മീനിയായിലെ ഒരു കുലീന കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് ജോണ്‍ ജനിച്ചത്. ദൈവവിശ്വാസമുള്ള മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ അവനെ യേശുവിനെക്കുറിച്ചു പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. ആത്മീയവിശുദ്ധിയില്‍ ജീവിക്കണമെന്നു വളരെ ചെറിയ പ്രായത്തില്‍ തന്നെ ജോണ്‍ പ്രതിജ്ഞയെടുത്തിരുന്നു. തന്റെ നാവ് പാപത്തിനു കാരണമാകുന്നുവെന്നു മനസിലാക്കിയ ജോണ്‍ വളരെ കുറച്ചുമാത്രമേ സംസാരിച്ചിരുന്നു. എപ്പോഴും ഒറ്റയ്ക്കിരുന്നു പ്രാര്‍ഥിക്കുകയും ഉപവസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ മരണശേഷം നിക്കോപൊലീസില്‍ പരിശുദ്ധ കന്യാമറിയത്തിന്റെ നാമത്തില്‍ ഒരു ആശ്രമത്തിന് ജോണ്‍ തുടക്കമിട്ടു. ജോണിനെപോലെ തന്നെ തീവ്ര ദൈവവിശ്വാസികളായിരുന്ന പത്തുപേര്‍ കൂടി ആശ്രമത്തില്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നു. വര്‍ഷങ്ങളോളം പ്രാര്‍ഥനകളിലും ഉപവാസങ്ങളിലും നിറഞ്ഞ് പുരോഹിത ജോലി നിര്‍വഹിച്ച ജോണിനെ ഇരുപത്തിയെട്ടാം വയസില്‍ സെബസ്തയിലെ ആര്‍ച്ച് ബിഷപ്പ് അര്‍മീനിയയിലെ കൊളോണിയല്‍ രൂപതയുടെ മെത്രാനായി അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്തു. തന്റെ ചുമതലകള്‍ ജോണ്‍ ഭംഗിയായി നിര്‍വഹിച്ചു. എങ്കിലും തന്റെ തപസിനും പ്രാര്‍ഥനകള്‍ക്കും ഒരു മുടക്കവും ജോണ്‍ വരുത്തിയില്ല. അര്‍ഫമീനിയന്‍ ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ അനാവശ്യമായി പള്ളിക്കാര്യങ്ങളില്‍ ഇടപെടുന്നതില്‍ ജോണ്‍ അസ്വസ്ഥനായിരുന്നു. ഒരു ദി...
